Long service awards for Gavin and John at show

Flagship farming event The Lincolnshire Show was a huge success with attendances up on last year.

The threat of heavy rain loomed large over the two-day event but thankfully for exhibitors and competitors it held off for the most part, and 70,000 people packed into the Lincolnshire Showground for the 124th show.

South Lincolnshire traders and farmers were well represented with companies such as Style Roses of Holbeach, Geo Adams & Sons, Spalding's Rabtrack Ltd and Grasmere Farm in Deeping St James among those with trade stands at the event.

Other attractions included a flower show and garden centre, a pig race, falconry demonstrations and a number of livestock competitions.

It was a special occasion for former Holbeach St Marks Primary School friends John Sharpe and Gavin Naylor, as they were both presented with long service awards by Lincolnshire Agricultural Society president Richard Parker.

Mr Sharpe was presented with a medal for his 40 years of service at agro-chemical company Brown Butlin in Holbeach and Mr Naylor was given a bar for his 45-year contribution to J Ward & Son in Holbeach St Marks.

Mr Naylor said: "It was pretty good really. You don't think of it like that when you're working. You take it for granted and don't think how long you've been doing it for.

"I've known John since we went to school together and although we aren't in each other's pockets we are there for each other if there's a need."

Mr Sharpe added: "Brown Butlin also gave me a party in November when I had spent my 40 years there and also paid for a four-day break to Dublin for me and my wife, so they keep me well!

"It was a very good show with a big variety of things to see and it has still kept its agricultural connections."

Despite the success of the show, organisers have come under fire with some complaining about the 16 entry fee and prices charged by the food stalls.

The costs have been defended by the organisers, who stated that attending the show is like attending four or five events at once.
