Council leader: ‘Neither Spalding development proposal excites me’
SOUTH Holland District Council leader Gary Porter has fired a warning shot across the bows of both developers hoping to launch schemes in Spalding.
He said: “I wouldn’t bet on either of them getting approval because I haven’t seen anything that would convince me that we would want to do what either of them are proposing.
“From what I have seen, I would not recommend either of the two proposals, but if either of the two are likely to be developed in a way that does become attractive at the moment my money would be on Mr Moran getting there first.”
And Coun Porter reissued a challenge he previously made last year for Mr Garvie to show him the results of the consultation Mr Garvie claims he carried out with 3,300 Spalding residents.

Friday, February 24, 2012 at 06:00 PMCllr Porter's comment, 'I wouldn’t bet on either of them getting approval because I haven’t seen anything that would convince me that we would want to do what either of them are proposing'?? Well, what is it 'we' are proposing?? What is it 'we' are looking for?? And who is 'we'?? Is Cllr Porter speaking for the people of South Holland because I'd loved to know what he has based his opinions on if he is? Isn't this what Mr Garvie is doing?? Both are speaking for the people of South Holland without actually providing any evidence to prove what the majority of us actually want? Whatever the people of South Holland want, Spalding needs something!!

Friday, February 24, 2012 at 03:00 PMMr Porters performance and many of his past comments certainly has not impressed me! I suspect very little impresses our council leader and friends which is why this town is stuck in the dark ages and all SHDC do is maintain the status quo, unless of course there is a ‘bribe’ dressed up as a contribution to the community involved. In which case, he is happy to saddle our town with changes few people welcome.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 08:54 AM"Neither Proposal excites me" ... well Mr Porter ... your lack lustre performance as the council chief fails to excite me and many other residents of Spalding I would imagine .... Spalding is not a huge place and it does not take a genius in town planning to recognise that there are extremely limited options for development in the town ...Holland MarketBus Station seem to be the only areas that offer potential for additional generation "IN TOWN" ... so good luck Corbo .... and please Spalding Guardian can we stop giving free publicity to Garvie ... if I read another line about his "ficticious" survey I think I will have a seizure, his past of being a two bit DJ on a small provincial radio station clearly does not qualify this guy to head a regeneration organisation ...he's clueless, much the same as the local council to be honest ... Let the professional bodies deal with this matter.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 06:01 PM@ 3 Canterbury has always managed to keep a mix of small and large together with old and new, Chichester likewise. The are out there, but all Spalding knows how to do is mix the worst of the 1970's with the worst of so called modern and create a dump to live in.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 03:56 PMWhat is breathtaking is the fact that Mr G. Porter did NOT pursue Spalding's very own Walter Mitty ('nee Garvie) for his 'survey' as in logical terms, this would be the act of a council type person getting to grips with the matter and sorting out this load of rubbish for what it is, as opposed to messing about going to see his chum 'Call Me Dave' for tea and biscuits and making notes about the wallpaper and possible seating arrangements within to tell us all about. Consistant or what?

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 02:35 PMThe only way to regenerate the town center as a traditional english market town is to get the small independant traders back. Unfortunately in this age of high rentsrates and sometimes unfair competition from the multinational chains and the internet, that ain't going to happen. Anyway that is not the job of the likes of Corbo. To keep the town center alive we have to come up with something different. What Mr Porter and the council need to be sure of is that the CorboGarvey plans do not take the existing traders out of the town centre by offering more attractive premises or rents. As it is the market place area looks like a car park, desolate & unloved. We are looking to our elected council to get this right.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 02:16 PMLet's be careful what we wish for when we talk of regenerating the town centre. Can anybody point to a traditional market town centre that the local people were happy with for the most part, but then got regenerated and is now a windswept, concrete desert of off the shelf chain shops? Actually, let's put it the other way around, can anybody point to one that hasn't been ruined in this way? It took Basingstoke 2 goes over 30 years to get it half right. Campaign for.. Makes a very good point about turning Spalding into Peterborough or worse still, Basildon.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 10:38 AMWho's stolen the real Cllr.Porter and replaced him with this person? Moron being the most likely is no surprise, but at last some sense shining through! Lets have a developer propose plans to regenerate the Town centre as a traditional English Market Town, we already have cities nearby for the metropolitan, litter strew, dirty, choked concrete, overpopulated experience.
