Bull calf makes surprise arrival

THIS bull calf was just hours old when our photographer captured him with mum keeping a close watch nearby.
He is one of three bull calfs to be born at Ancona Farm at Gedney Dyke where farmer Alan Hargreaves keeps Lincoln Reds.
Alan said the calf had arrived a few days early, adding: “It caught me by surprise. I am usually there when every one is born, but this one caught me out.”
The calf weighed a healthy 45lbs at birth and is the first calf for her mother, Ancona Matilda, described by Alan as “the best one I have bred”, coming second, third and fourth in some big classes at various shows. These include the Lincolnshire Show, where she was in the grand parade for two years running.
The father is a bull Alan bought from a breeder in North Lincolnshire and is called Walmer Motivator, named after an Epsom Derby winner Alan won money on.
Alan, who has kept the breed for eight years and is chief steward at Lincoln Red bull sales, has 18 Lincoln Reds, which are popular throughout the county and in the rest of the country.
He said: “They are the prettiest of breeds. I always wanted beef cattle and a pure breed, and with Lincoln Reds being the indigenous breed it was a pretty easy decision to make. They are so attractive.”
All three calfs were born within a week of each other – Red Rum, Rod Stewart and the as yet unnamed calf.
