Spalding’s street drinkers will face £100 on-the-spot fines if the town’s police can persuade the Home Office to take up the initiative.

The new fine would be included in a set of sweeping new powers putting on-street drinking on a par with other forms of anti-social behaviour such as criminal damage, graffiti and noisy neighbours.

Home Office officials are considering the booze fines after talks with Spalding community police inspector Jim Tyner who believes the penalty should be added to a new Anti-Social Behaviour bill to boost existing powers where police can only take away alcohol from a person drinking.
