SCHOOL gates stayed shut yesterday morning after a burst pipe left 7,000 homes and businesses in Bourne without water.

Pupils at Robert Manning College, Bourne Grammar School, Bourne Abbey Academy Primary, Bourne Westfield, The Willoughby School and Morton Primary School were told to stay at home, although it is believed exams did still go ahead at Robert Manning.

A spokesman for Anglian Water said the problem was caused by an large 18in pipe bursting at its water treatment plant in Bourne at 5.30am.

He said a large number of staff were sent to the site to initially bypass the affected pipe and restore water to premises, before repairs were carried out.

He said: “Our priority, obviously, was to restore the supply to those affected as soon as possible.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this caused.”

The supply was restored between 10am and 11am. Customers were assured that any cloudiness in the water was due to air in the system and that the quality and safety of the water was not compromised.
