Bookmark has chosen Jambusters, by Julie Summers, as its book of the week.

Making jam, gathering rosehips, housing evacuees, setting up canteens for the troops, knitting and singing were not only part of the everyday life of the WI but at the heart of their war efforts. Two decades of educating, entertaining and supporting women and campaigning on women’s issues culminated in the enormous collective responsibility felt by members to ‘do their bit’. A third of a million country women set out to make life more bearable in what they described as ‘a period of insanity’. Through archive material and interviews with many WI members, Julie Summers takes us behind the scenes. Jambusters is the fascinating story of how the Women’s Institute pulled rural Britain through the war with pots of jam and a spirit of make-do-and-mend.

The book retails for £8.99 but you can buy it for £6.39 at Bookmark with the discount voucher in the Spalding Guardian of March 19.
