Bookmark in Spalding has chosen Shopgirls by Pamela Cox and Annabel Hobley as its book of the week.

This week’s Book of the Week gives you the chance to go behind the counter to meet the shopgirls and hear their incredible true stories.

Based on the BBC series, Shopgirls is a lively and colourful history full of true stories of friendship, hardship and triumph. Follow Chili Bouchier on her journey from the small ladies’ department at Harrods to star of the silver screen, and experience the raw courage of John Lewis’s Miss Austin during the Blitz in the West End. Join Margaret Bondfield as she goes undercover, fiercely championing the rights of her fellow shopgirls; and stand alongside the impoverished inter-war store assistants who stole stockings to supplement their meagre wages. Then celebrate the art school entrepreneurs who kick-started the boutique movement of the Swinging Sixties and made the shop floor their own. There are also some photographs and pictures from the different eras, including the unveiling, on November 16, 1898, of a technological marvel: Britain’s first moving staircase!
