Bookmark in Spalding has chosen Downton Abbey: Rules for Household Staff as its Book of the Week.

This week we have a real treat for Downton Abbey fans! Charles Carson, butler to the Earl of Grantham, has compiled his book of Rules for Household Staff.

It looks, as you would expect from Carson, perfect and would make a gorgeous gift for any Downton devotee.

Even the introduction to the book will whisk you back to the elegant world of Downton: ‘Containing the most approved directions and guidance for staff in every station’.

You will receive advice about early rising (for a kitchen maid, 4.30am); waiting on a dining table (always walk around the table in a clockwise direction); and how to maintain a pocket watch (the fumes of paraffin will help if it is losing time).

This recently recovered and fascinating staff handbook answers all of these questions and more. It is a wonderful insight into a lost world and will make you chuckle as instructions about pert answers, avoidance of tale bearing and respect are given.

Bookmark is offering a 20 per cent discount off the retail price of £12.99 until November 5 with the voucher contained in the Spalding Guardian of October 30.
