He’s already given mince pies, Crème eggs and Mars Bars a battering, now a Spalding chippie is really taking the biscuit – by serving up deep fried Oreos.

Bill Rai, who has run Oh My Cod, in Alexandra Road, with wife Sandy for four years, added the latest food hybrid to his menu last week – and customers can’t get enough.

“We did a little trial with the Oreos about six months ago and customers really seemed to like them,” said Mr Rai, whose shop was named among the best 50 chippies nationwide by Fry Magazine earlier this year.

“People kept coming in and asking for them, but this is the first chance we’ve had to do them properly. I prefer the Oreos to the Crème eggs as they were too sweet for me; the Oreos are really nice and have a dough-nutty flavour.

“The biscuits go a little bit like cake, but they’re really nice and fluffy and the batter keeps it all inside. It’s a bit like eating a cake with a doughnut!”

Comments on the shop’s Facebook page included “Oh my God! Need these in my life,” from Natasha Ellis, while Danielle King wrote: “I need to try this – Sunday night tea?!”

They are selling for 40p each or two for 70p and will be on the menu for the next few weeks until Christmas, when Mr Rai re-introduces battered mince pies, which were a big hit last December.

“The mince pies will be back by popular demand,” added Mr Rai.

“People are really keen to try all these things. They come to us with all these crazy ideas – we’ve even had one asking for deep fried black pudding.”
