THE Union Flag raised for the Jubilee at the Sir Halley Stewart field will be lowered and turned around...because it was upside down.

Spalding United Football Club chairman Chris Toynton apologised to people who had complained and agreed to put the error right as soon as he was made aware.

An upside down Union Flag, with the broader white diagonal stripe uppermost in the two quadrants away from the pole instead of where they should be in the nearest quadrants, can be read as an insult.

Mr Toynton said: “I hadn’t seen this myself as we’re out of the season but full apologies to those it’s offended. It’s a serious matter and we don’t want to upset anybody,.”
