Richard and Tina Kitchen took over what is now known as The Chestnuts – the farm shop, restaurant and garden centre just off the A17 at Gedney – in the early spring.

The season was very swiftly in full swing but that hasn’t held back this Spalding couple with ambitious plans for the future of the business.

Richard and Tina were looking for an opportunity in the garden centre line after 30 years or more in the fresh produce business in Richard’s case, the last few years spent travelling down to Kent for work.

When Richard tired of the travelling, he and Tina set about looking for a garden centre for sale, only buying the Gedney centre when an opportunity in Norfolk fell through at the start of this year.

Richard says the popular tea room benefits from local as well as passing trade and simply needs refreshing, although there are plans afoot to make the kitchen larger and to enhance the patio area.

The farm shop is being developed into a food hall, focusing on local produce, and increasing the offering in terms of the food and products available.

Richard says the kitchen staff are making pies and cakes that can be enjoyed on the premises or taken away and eaten at home.

Richard and Tina have gained planning permission to increase the covered area of the garden centre by over 100 per cent so that both customers and plants are protected from the weather.

The changes will result in a much larger car parking area.
