CONKER nuts showed off their smashing skills as the first Lincolnshire Yellowbelly Conker Championship went ahead at the weekend.

The event, at The Towngate Inn, Market Deeping, was a welcome addition to the conker calendar after this month’s world championships – the pinnacle of the conker season – had to be cancelled because of high winds.

The eventual winner of the event was the 2007 World Conker Champion Ady Hurrell, who lost just one group game before beating his brother Maurice in the semi-final and going on to beat Kevin Rodgers in the final.

Semi-finalist Maurice made up for his disappointment by winning the ninth Bourne Conker Championship the following day, while Ady lost in the quarter-finals.
