Doreen recalls she was sweeping leaves outside the farm where she worked as a Land Girl and feeling slightly sorry for herself.

A passing young man stopped his bike and told her she wasn’t looking very happy.

When she retorted that he wouldn’t be happy either if he was 21 and sweeping leaves, he offered to take her to the pictures in Spalding. Doreen says she wasn’t sure whether she was meant to cycle there. However, when he turned up for her it was in a car. They were married within a year.

That man was the late Fred King, who farmed Willow Tree Farm next door to Doreen’s home in Holbeach Drove. The couple were married for 56 years and had six children.

Doreen says: “It’s been hard, but on the other hand I have been lucky and you think yourself very lucky to be around. My birthday party was just amazing.”

A total of 120 family and friends celebrated Doreen’s 90th with a party at the Memorial Hall at Gedney Hill.
