SOUTH Holland's twin box scheme is to be axed in favour of a single collection to help increase the amount of rubbish recycled in the district.

Green boxes collected weekly and blue boxes collected once a month by South Holland District Council look likely to be replaced by clear plastic sacks.

Instead of separating glass from paper, card and plastic for recycling, residents will be able to put all the materials together for one weekly collection.

The proposals were unveiled by economic and environment portfolio holder Howard Johnson during the council's full meeting on Wednesday.

Coun Johnson said: "Subject to approval we will be replacing the boxes and there will be publicity in due course. We expect that our recycling rates might go up as a result."

Coun Johnson envisaged that the service would be more efficient if there was one weekly recycling collection across the district.

Coun Johnson added: "Our current recycling rate is running at about 24 per cent, give or take. We expect this to change and push up to 27 to 29 per cent."
