A new teen park designed for Donington youngsters has been officially opened.
Youngsters from the Flinders Founders group have worked hard to establish the park in Towndam Lane, which includes facilities for skateboarding, BMX riding and inline skating as well as a teen shelter.

The youth group, made up of 13 to 19-year-olds, consulted young people in the area to see what they wanted in the teen park and arranged for a mobile skatepark to visit Donington to see how it was received.

They also went around the county and looked at different designs for parks and heard about some of the potential pitfalls surrounding similar projects.

The youngsters successfully applied for a £79,000 grant and employed Groundwork Lincolnshire to project manage the building of the park for them.

Thomas Cowley High School teacher Margaret Wright has helped Flinders Founders along the way and acts as their secretary.

She said: "The opening event was excellent and it was wonderful to see it all come together.

"This is just phase one of the project and the group will look to work on the entrance and put some more equipment on the park to build on what they have got.

"The group's aim is to try and get young people involved in the community and to try and make life better in Donington and that work will continue."

Flinders Founders also recently arranged a first aid course for youngsters, with 14 young people learning essential life skills under the tuition of a St John Ambulance trainer.

The group got funding for the course from the Youth Opportunities Fund and the youngsters received certificates for their Young First Aider qualification at Thomas Cowley High School.

Future events include a family fun and quiz night at the Community Centre in Towndam Lane on Friday, July 4, and the Donington Party in the Park at Abbotts Field on Saturday, July 19.
