Parish councillors want to get to the bottom of a mystery surrounding a footbridge in Gosberton Risegate which has been closed because it is not safe.
Risegate Eau bridge was shut by Lincolnshire County Council highways officers after it was reported unsafe but no-one knows who is responsible for repairing it.

Gosberton Parish Council chairman Robert Haresign said: "The bridge needs major repairs but there is a big problem sorting out who it belongs to.

"Highways have said it isn't theirs and the river boards said it is not theirs either.

"We have been trying to find out who it belongs to since October or November without success.

"I have had a lot of complaints from people about the bridge and it is quite frustrating that we can't find out who owns it."

Mr Haresign said the closure means people have to walk quite a distance to get over the drain.

Area highways manager Andy Wharff said: "We received a report from a member of the public regarding the safety of the footbridge and consequently decided to close it due to public safety.

"We are currently in discussions with the parish council regarding ownership of the footbridge and looking at a way forward in terms of future improvements. Once this has been agreed, maintenance of the existing bridge can be sorted out."
