Striking a fair deal with local producers is one way to combat the economic gloom, according to an independent shop owner.
Jamie Smith, who runs Spalding Farm Shop in Scoldhall Lane, Surfleet, says he copes with the fluctuating economy by doing deals with local growers.

Mr Smith prefers to arrange a set price for produce that he buys at the start of the year and keeps it the same, irrespective of economic up or downturns.

He said: "We have had fantastic sales – even up on previous years. I do keep an eye on the prices but I think people shop here for good quality local produce.

"I do feel for other retailers and I do think this is going to be a tough year."

Mr Smith said: "We get vegetables fresh every morning and we try and work with producers so that even when prices shoot up in the supermarkets we can have the same price."

The store won a Grower's and Retailer's award for good customer service and showcasing Lincolnshire's food in the Tastes of Lincolnshire Competition.
