Community bloom efforts in spotlight

South Holland was put under the spotlight as judges from East Midlands in Bloom have visited towns and villages.
Judges John Simpson and Tim Sharp took in the delights of Spalding thanks to a guided tour by Spalding in Bloom chairman Angela Newton.
They spent three hours in the town during which they looked around Ayscoughfee Gardens, The Crescent and Francis Street, Hall Place, the Sheep Market, Springfields and a residential garden in Hawthorn Bank.
Mrs Newton said: "We were the first town the judges had been too and obviously they were non-committal, although they were very impressed with The Crescent area and the fact that about 80 per cent of traders there had supported Spalding in Bloom.
"They also commented on the flowers outside the Red Lion Hotel, The Punchbowl and Longstaff."
The judges were given a presentation on recycling and composting by Emily Rowell, street scene co-ordinator for South Holland District Council.
Mrs Newton added: "We will have to wait until September to find out the Judges visited the Peele Community College in Long Sutton to look at the students' garden.
It was started in March and has been entered in the school garden category of East Midlands in Bloom.
Students Charlie Thomas and Josh Reeve showed judge Rupert Atkinson and Long Sutton in Bloom committee members Tony Button, Kay Jenkinson and Jim Conlay around the garden.
Donington youth group Flinders Found-ers is in the running for the neighbourhood category of East Midlands in Bloom.
Judge John Bunkle visited the town to look at the youth park, incorporating a skatepark and BMX park, which the group set up over the last two years.
Margaret Wright, adult member of Flinders Founders, said: "The judging went very well.
"The young people have worked really hard to make Donington a better place and it is nice to see them being acknowledged."
