Published Date: 01 January 2009
The grim spectre of the financial crisis has not stopped upbeat Spalding shoppers from planning for the future.
Reporter Adam Uren went out into Spalding town centre on Monday to find out what New Year's Resolutions they will be trying to keep, and what challenges the UK faces in 2009.

  • Tim Barber (16) and girlfriend Becca Walling (17), both from Spalding, are looking to continue their education in order to get good jobs.

Tim said: "I'm at college but I'm hoping to get a bricklaying job this year, although it will be difficult considering the way things are at the moment."

  • Eleanor Stanton (26), who was visiting family in Spalding, is hoping to learn to drive and possibly learn a foreign language in 2009.

She said: "I haven't learned to drive before because I have been lazy and I couldn't afford it so now is probably the time to learn.

"I'm upbeat about the state of the country. As long as people are sensible with their money I don't think there will be too much to worry about."

  • Kat Hughes has set a time limit on her New Year's Resolution, to find a place to live in Spalding before she returns home briefly with her husband to Ireland tomorrow.

She said: "We have been searching for a house and we need to find something suitable by Friday. We are just hoping for health and happiness in 2009."

  • University student Rachel Wilson (22), of Dowsby, is hoping to cut down one of her habits before her cousin's wedding in two months' time.

She said: "I will try to drink less in the run up to the wedding as I am going to be a bridesmaid. I also want to keep healthy and maybe take up kickboxing."

  • Roger Mitchell (65), who lives near Sutton Bridge, said: "I don't make any resolutions because I don't keep them! I do hope for world peace in 2009, even though I don't think it can happen.

"I also think that the economic challenges facing the country are going to get worse."

  • Dance teacher Felisberto Bereira (34), of Peterborough, said: "I don't like making such plans because they never come off.

"I think a new government might be in order to make things a little bit better on the jobs and economy front."

  • Retired John Lewis (66), of Morton, is hoping an improvement on the golf course in 2009 can keep him healthy throughout the year.

He said: "I want to get down to a low handicap, keep myself fit and eat less chocolate."

  • Personal trainer Gareth Ramsden (21), of Gosberton Risegate, wants to steer clear of major vices.

He said: "I don't smoke and I don't drink so I just want to carry on as I am. I do want to get back into rugby again and play some more sports.

"I also hope that England's sport teams do a bit better this year!"
