Projects that will bring prosperity and benefits to south Lincolnshire's rural communities and environments will get a massive boost thanks to a Fens group securing £2m funding.
The Wash Fens Local Action Group, which covers South Holland and Boston, is celebrating after receiving the cash boost from East Midlands Development Agency.

The money will be used over the next five years to support farmers, micro-businesses, tourism organisations and community/voluntary groups to deliver projects that will bring benefits to the area.

The bid was developed by the newly-formed Wash Fens Local Action Group, which brings together the private, public and voluntary sectors.

Lincolnshire County Council is a key partner and will act as the accountable body for the funding and, along with South Holland District Council and Boston Borough Council, has contributed match-funding.

Gemma Rainsforth, action group member and senior development officer at Groundwork Lincolnshire, said: "This is a fantastic result for local businesses and communities and will make a real difference to the prosperity and quality of life for local people.

"The action group is looking forward to working with a range of partners and individuals to deliver projects that will boost the local economy and move the area forward."

South Holland District Council rural strategy portfolio and Rural Action Zone member Coun Nick Worth said: "This is great news and a real boost for micro businesses and the rural economy.

"It will provide opportunities for new and innovative ideas and provide much-needed support for those in the agricultural industry looking at new ways of diversification."

The funding has been secured from the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) LEADER Approach, an initiative delivered through EMDA and jointly funded by the European Commission and DEFRA.

The group must now formalise the grant fund and compile application papers.

The first grants are expected to be available from April.
