VERA Angelo must have peeled something like 2,000 onions while making her pickles and chutneys for charity, but says she didn’t cry.

“I think I got so used to it,” said the 78-year-old mother to two, grandmother to five and great grandmother to four.

Vera, of Moulton Seas End, has been doing charity work since she was 12 when, because there were no distractions such as television, she began making toys which were donated to Dr Barnado’s.

Vera has kept her hands busy ever since, making jams, chutneys, pickled onions, toys and cakes, selling her preserves at the Golden Lion in the village. The latest batch made £1,330, which was handed over to Macmillan Cancer Support. Vera thanked the pub and Oldershaws who gave her all the onions, saying: “Without them I couldn’t have done it.”
