As well as teaching music at Boston College at one time, Nigel Portass has taught thousands of students at his shop in Sutton Bridge.

Among his successes are the keyboard player in Beautiful South and the drummer in The Glitter Band.

He adds: “I think I have taught most people round here and a lot have gone on to become teachers. I just enjoy what I am doing, that’s the main thing. I still teach and play in two or three different bands.”

One of the bands he plays in, Redemption, includes his son Sean on drums – and it is Sean’s pub in Long Sutton where Nigel plays regularly.

Playing in different bands brings Nigel into contact with other, professional musicians, which he says improves his own work.

He says: “I don’t think there is ever an end to music. It’s a creative art so it depends how quick your creative juices flow, I suppose.

“I am doing a Grade 8 exam at the moment and some of the stuff I am having to teach is making me blink a bit, and it forces me to practice.

“That’s what I like about lessons. It keeps you on your toes.”
