A Viking-themed festival involving longships and torchlights has set a Scottish Highland village alight, with a retired RAF serviceman from Gosberton at the helm.

Bruce Anderson (78) was among 200 people who were part of the annual Scalloway Fire Festival in the Shetland Isles.

The festival saw teams of guizers or actors dress up in Viking costumes and carry torches, accompanied by a Viking galley or longship, on a procession through Scalloway before the galley was launched into the sea, filled with the flaming torches.

Mr Anderson, pictured with sister-in-law Maureen Grant, said the festival was a “copy of a Viking funeral” which continued with a village hall dance. (Photo supplied).
