Tears of laughter at The Magistrate

editorial image

The National Theatre screening of The Magistrate last Thursday at South Holland Centre gave us the chance to see another superb play without leaving Spalding.

It was another in the series of The National Theatre productions broadcast live to cinemas.

This time it was Arthur Wing Pinero’s hilarious Victorian comedy The Magistrate directed by Timothy Sheader.

It’s about a night of misunderstandings, hair-raising discoveries and frantic escapes from the law following widow Agatha’s little white lie about her age to kindly magistrate Posket.

John Lithgow (of 3rd Rock from the Sun fame) was, as you would expect, brilliant all the way through and had me in tears of laughter, as was Nancy Carroll who played his wife. But for me the performance by Joshua McGuire, who played Agatha’s son from her first marriage, was my favourite: he was energetic, acrobatic and utterly raucous!

The set was beautifully designed as a moving, living Victorian child’s pop-up book and worked so well with the story.

As always, I came away from The National Theatre Live screening feeling privileged at seeing such a quality performance in my local theatre. I recommend that anyone who has not tried this experience book tickets for the next NT Live screening at the centre.
