‘Olympics’ band is recruiting now

Waiting for Video...

A band whose members hit the high notes with performances at the Olympics last year is on the lookout for new recruits.

Free lessons, free instruments and free uniforms are on offer to anyone aged between nine and 25 years who is keen to join Spalding Marching Ambassadors.

An Olympics ‘gig’ isn’t in the offing any time soon, but successful band members can expect to take part in shows, carnivals, the St George’s Day Parade in Spalding and competitions against other bands.

Jim Bright has been bandmaster for 35 years and the crowning glory to his musical career came last year when he was one of five Marching Ambassadors chosen to appear at the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympics.

The Marching Ambassadors are Spalding Flower Parade regulars and will appear at this year’s last ever parade.

The band currently has about 15 members and Mr Bright is keen to double that.

“We are badly in need of trumpeters at the moment,” he said.

Two trumpeters have had to switch to other instruments after having braces fitted to their teeth.

Mr Bright says it takes two or three years to learn trumpet, but it gives young people another string to their bow.

“I have some good instructors that have stayed with me over the years, my grandson, Tristan, for one,” he said.

As well as welcoming young people to its ranks, the band involves parents with coffee mornings and socials.

“We like to bring everyone together,” he said.

The Marching Ambassadors haven’t been involved in competitions for couple of years, but hope to return to winning ways this year with competitions in Stoke and Barnsley.

• Anyone interested in joining the band can contact Mr Bright on 01775 723087 or turn up on a practice night at 7pm on Wednesdays at the United Reformed Church in Pinchbeck Road, Spalding.
