Odd Couple was very funny play
SPALDING´S very own Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society (SADOS) put on its latest production last week.
The Odd Couple, written by Neil Simon, was chosen by director Pete Ayre and was performed wonderfully by the eight-strong cast.
The lead roles of odd couple Olive Maddison and Florence Unger were portrayed brilliantly by Kathy Mellor and Patsy Figg.
The two are flung together when Florence and her husband split up and she has no-where to go.
Olive, a carefree divorcee who thrives on living in cheerful chaos, invites Florence to move in with disastrous consequences.
Set in New York, the cast had the unenviable task of acting out the whole play with American accents, no mean feat for a production lasting about two hours.
Kathy and Patsy, who were on stage almost the whole time, made this look easy. In fact by the end of the night it was hard to imagine either of them speaking without the accents.
Both stood out among the cast, playing their parts perfectly.
A supporting cast of Trish Davis (Renee), Sharon Sutton (Sylvie), Vanessa Fowler (Mickey) and Arline Evenden (Vera), as Olive and Florences best friends, and Brian Jackson and Ed Rees (Spanish brothers Manolo and Jesus Costazuela) completed the line-up.
This was a very funny play and enjoyed by everyone in the audience, including me.
After each performance there was a collection for the bereaved families of New York firefighters who lost their lives in the September 11 terrorist attacks.
This collection, which was organised by Kathy Mellor due to the fact the play was set in New York, raised more than 200.
