Murder in three venues

Thursday: 9am A DRAMATIC story of a struggle for power will be told in three venues this month.

"Murder in the Cathedral" comes to St Peter and St Paul Church in Gosberton next Thursday, St Mary Magdalene Church in Gedney on Friday, and St Mary and St Nicolas Church in Spalding on March 20.

St Nicolas Players continue their practice of producing a wide range of quality theatre by moving from their last production of a Lloyd-Webber/Rice musical to one of the great plays of the 20th century.

Murder in the Cathedral by TS Eliot was written for the 1936 Canterbury Festival.

The script covers the last 27 days of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, to December 29, 1170, who has returned from exile in France.

Many believe he should return and he is visited by four tempters to persuade him away from his devotion to the church.

The tempters offer various powers including the pleasures of his past friendship with the King, an alliance with the Barons, a return to a former position as chancellor, and a position as a martyr.

On Christmas Day Thomas delivers a sermon explaining that the birth of Christ leads inevitably to his death, and the death of a martyr is a decision of God.

On December 29 four knights arrive on the King's business, accusing Thomas of revolt and treason – and later returning after a bout of drinking, kill him.

Eliot then has the knights address the audience and provide plausible explanations for their deed, and why they should suffer no blame.

All performances start at 7.30pm. Tickets 7 and guests are advised to bring a cushion.
