Harmonies go to West End

Handful of Harmonies, a women’s choir based in south Lincolnshire, has an important gig coming up.

The women – who meet in six groups at Langtoft, Bourne, Market Deeping, Spalding as well as Stamford and Peterborough – are to perform in the West End.

Musical director Andrew Clingo applied to take some of the women to perform at Her Majesty’s Theatre at the beginning of October – and that went down so well they have been asked to return at the beginning of December.

In addition to an already full diary of local performances, such as at Baston Church on December 15 (7.30pm, ticket only) and at the Waggon and Horses at Langtoft on December 23 (3pm), the choir has begun to rehearse its London repertoire “with great enthusiasm”, according to Sue Ward, who sings with the choir at its Spalding meeting place at the Ivo Day Centre.

A year on from what began as a six-week project, there are 200 women meeting regularly to sing for pleasure. Sue says they even cut their first dvd of the Lloyd Webber/Gary Barlow Jubilee Song to celebrate their first year.

Andrew says: “A Handful of Harmonies has been established to cater for the needs of ladies who want a new and educational hobby to sing and share beautiful music.

“Our members tell how singing with us is has improved their health. Breathing, wellbeing, concentration have improved in many of our members while at the same time developing a wonderfully warm feeling of belonging to something personal, unique and special.

“By limiting the numbers in each of our choirs we ensure that this personal touch is not lost by becoming too large and ‘corporate’.”
