Crowds turn out to spread Christmas cheer in Holbeach

Children and adults celebrated the start of Christmas in Holbeach on Sunday with an array of events aimed at spreading festive cheer in the town.

Hundreds of people lined the streets for this year’s Christmas fayre as a school choir, Holbeach Town Band, the pantomime cast from Circus Mondeo and even a 20 tonne Howitzer tank all added to the day’s festivities.

Businesses in Holbeach supported the event with about 60 stalls selling everything from food and drink to toys and other Christmas gift ideas.

Long queues formed outside Santa’s Grotto near All Saints Church as children waited excitedly to have their picture taken with Father Christmas and other guests included John Hayes, MP for South Holland and The Deepings, along with Lord and Lady Taylor of Holbeach.

Eden Loweth, chairman of the organising committee, said: “It was a really good day, the weather was fantastic and it was great to see the amount of people we did who came out to support the Christmas fayre.

“There were a lot of new stalls this year, which went down really well with the people of Holbeach, and a lot of producers said it was one of the best events they’d been to.

“It was quite a sight to see a massive tank coming through Holbeach in the morning and people were wondering what was going on.

“But it was really popular with the kids and Harold Payne, who brought the tank down, was able to raise some money for Help for Heroes.”

Presenters from a county radio station broadcast live throughout the day and a host of street dancers, stilt walkers, clowns and a Punch and Judy show added to the entertainment.

Eden said: “The fayre reminded me of the day when the Olympic torch came through Holbeach in July because it brought the community together and the good feedback we’ve had from people is very much appreciated.”
