Book of the Week: The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

This comes extremely highly recommended; all of us in the bookshop have read and absolutely loved this book and we’re sure that you will too.

The book begins with the arrival of a letter from an old friend of Harold’s who is writing to say goodbye as she is dying from cancer.

Harold struggles to find any words that will serve as an adequate reply to this and then he leaves his house to post his letter as his wife vacuums upstairs.

But what neither of them knows is that Harold is about to walk from one end of the country to the other.

He has no hiking boots or map, let alone a compass, a waterproof or a mobile phone.

All he knows is that he must keep walking to save someone else’s life.

The story of Harold’s walk is also the story of his and his wife’s past and of all those he meets along the way.

It is a truly wonderful and heart-warming story.
