Blind Holbeach soldier’s sweetshop

Have your say

We reported the story of the First World War romance between blind Holbeach soldier Corpl Arthur Brown and Miss Mary Taylor a couple of weeks ago.

Since then a relative, Geoff Mackinder, has been in touch to share the photograph above of Arthur laying a wreath at the war memorial, Geoff thinks in Holbeach. He remembers his father, Jack Mackinder, talking about travelling from Long Sutton to visit Uncle Arthur and Aunt Mary at their sweep shop in Holbeach, possibly in Church Street. Jack spoke of his uncle’s sense of humour, despite his blindness.
