It is true that the present sports facilities require improvements and updating but the best location for this is at the Castle field.
If the sports complex is moved out of town this will stop a lot of people from using it as it will be harder to get to (bus services) and extra costs (bus fares, fuel costs) and less convenient.
The Castle Sports Complex is not fully used now. In
an out of town location even fewer people will use it, resulting in a downward spiral of lower use and higher charges. This has happened at other out of town sports facilities.
The present rundown/poorly maintained state of all the sports facilities is down to a lack of funding by the council (is this due to a hidden agenda?)
Will they let a new sports village go the same way? Why can't grants be obtained for the present site? Only a small upgrade is required.
It is surprising that the council allowed a local developer to buy the old pub at the Albion Street entrance as this could have been used to enlarge the car park. There is now a perceived link between the developer, the council and the outcome of the proposal. Perhaps the developer would let the council buy back this property to remove this conflict of interest.
This matter is not yet a done deal. The council cannot with all conscience oppose the views of the majority of the public. The clubs that use the Castle field are part of the heart of the town and that is where it should stop – in the heart of the town.
