IF an episode of Family Fortunes asked you to name ten animals that are kept as pets, what would the survey say?

Traditional choices such as cats and dogs are a surefire winner, while rabbits, hamsters and even snakes might also make their way onto the list.

But although Les Dennis might think you were animal crackers if you plumped for a pot-bellied pig, Cowbit man Grenville Owen would hand you the jackpot.

Grenville is the proud owner of four of the animals – Brillo, Darcy, Nasu and Twinkie – and is directly responsible for voluntarily re-homing countless porkers from across the world.

Such is his devotion to the humble pot-bellied pig that Grenville has even set up a website – aptly found at www.potbelliedpigs.co.uk – to spread the word about his four-legged friends.

He told the Spalding Guardian that pot-bellied pigs make excellent pets and hopes that his website will help educate people about the reality of life with the animals.

He said: "They are extremely easy to look after as long as you set them rules. There are certain things you can do with them because they are extremely intelligent animals.

"Brillo is really quick and has even worked out how to unlock a gate with a slide bolt across it.

"All of my pigs get fed at 5pm so if it gets to that time and they haven't eaten, it starts getting extremely noisy!

"There is very little that a pig cannot do. As long you learn to communicate with the pig they learn to trust you."

The animals are currently kept in pens at the Fulney Drove home Grenville shares with wife Barbara.

He has recently bought a mobile office building which he plans to convert into a hog Hilton for his lucky pigs.

And he even panders to his pets' musical tastes by playing them bluegrass music on his banjo.

But although Grenville has mastered the art of raising and looking after pot-bellied pigs, he is still inundated with phone calls and e-mails from people who have become unwilling or unable to look after their pets.

The problem was at its peak after Hollywood film Babe sparked a rush of pig purchases and Grenville fears an upcoming blockbuster featuring a talking pig will cause similar issues.

He said: "The amount of pigs I re-homed that were called Babe after that film came out was unbelievable.

"There's a talking pig in Charlotte's Web as well so it might happen again.

"One of the key things it says on my site is that you should go through all of the information before you get a pig.

"There is nothing worse than someone getting a pig and then saying they made a mistake."

Brillo will make his television debut next week when he appears on Channel Four's Three Minute Wonder show.
