Giant polar bear puppets are among the magical creatures featured in performances by the Spalding-based drama group at the South Holland Centre tomorrow and Saturday.

Philip Pullman's trilogy has been turned into two plays by the National Theatre to critical acclaim. The first book was adapted for the film The Golden Compass.

Children and adults the world over have become engrossed by the adventures of Lyra Belacqua, her daemon Pantalaimon and the mysterious Lord Asriel and Mrs Coulter.

Director Karl Gernert said: "It is never easy to take such a well-loved piece of literature and transfer it to the stage but Act II's drama group loves a challenge and members have surpassed themselves.

"They are all hugely talented and I am very proud to work with such a motivated and professional group of young people. The plays promise to delight both fans of the trilogy and those who are new to it."

Part I of His Dark Materials is tomorrow and Saturday at 7.30pm.

Part II is to be staged on Friday and Saturday, August 1 and 2.
