Whaplode's first ever medieval fayre has been hailed a great success, although organisers say it's definitely a one-off.
The three-day fayre took place in the grounds of St Mary's Church and was organised by Whaplode Heritage and Educational Action Team (WHEAT) to mark the granting of a charter to the monks of Crowland Abbey by King Edward I in 1307 allowing a weekly market and an annual six-day fair in the church grounds.

Attractions included archery and falconry displays, maypole dancing, minstrels, an archery competition and a demonstration of medieval cooking, along with a complete medieval knights' tent showcasing the associated equipment.

Secretary Len Thompson said: "The event went very well. The Friday was children's day and the church was packed.

"Whaplode Primary School put on Robin Hood, while students from Holbeach's George Farmer Technology and Language College did a play about St George.

"We also had eight living history sites with groups of children going from one to another.

"In the evening we had a concert by a group of minstrels called Troviere who specialise in medieval music. They were extremely good."

Lt Col John Dymoke, The Queen's Champion and Standard Bearer of England, opened the fayre on Saturday, making a speech before visiting the stalls.

Len said: "We had a lot of rain in the morning but in the afternoon it turned out nice and we had a lot of people along.

"Then in the evening there was a banquet with a medieval menu and more entertainment from Troviere and some storytellers.

"It was a huge success. Everyone had a great time.

"We have been asked if we will be doing it again next year but it was definitely a one-off event."
