Youth club on the road to new base
YOUNG people in Crowland might soon be making good use of the former site office used by workers who built the new A16.
A section of the county council-owned portable building has been donated to Crowland Parish Council, which hopes to turn it into a place to house Crowland Youth Scene.
The building is currently in storage but plans are being submitted to South Holland District Council to put it just off the car park by Snowden Pavilion.
Coun David Ringham, who is also a volunteer for Crowland Youth Scene, said the club had to find a new home when the police station was brought back into use.
He said: “They has been meeting in the Snowden Pavilion but that’s not ideal as there is a lot of equipment and we can not use it to let out to other people in the town.
“Getting this building is a big advantage to us.”
Coun Ringham hopes the new building can also be used by other community groups, which will then be able to link up with Crowland Youth Scene.
He added: “I hope this will be a project that will involve others. Certainly at the moment we are looking at it as a short-term temporary building and hopefully, as time goes by, we can raise funds for a permanent community building.”
Lincolnshire County Council senior project leader Lee Rowley said there was no further need for the portable building when the new road between Spalding and Peterborough was completed.
He said: “We didn’t get much interest when we tried to sell it, so it made perfect sense to see if the local community could make use of it.
“We’re delighted that the parish council is hoping to make use of part of one of the buildings as a new youth and community centre and hope they enjoy having a new facility on their doorstep.”
