Bill Hunter’s poster is advertising an auction at the White Hart Inn in Spalding on March 18, 1863.

The tolls were on the turnpike road from Spalding to Donington at Pinchbeck, Lingar House and Crossgate Bars, and Spalding Chain, to be let in one lot to the best bidder for a year. There were exemptions, such as carriages carrying manure. The tolls had totalled £603 the previous year, so was a lucrative operation.
