Sun shines on Christmas fair

Winter sunshine gave added sparkle to Long Sutton’s Christmas fair on Saturday as the crowds turned out to meet Santa Claus and a host of celebrities.

An Elvis impersonator, Scooby Doo, Sponge Bob and Dr Who were among the special guests as the town celebrated together and enjoyed a day of musical entertainment.

The fair was opened by South Holland and The Deepings MP John Hayes and there were words too from Father Jonathan Sibley and the Rev Nic Hasnip.

Santa Claus was by far the busiest man on the day as he presented more than 400 free presents to children – at least 50 more than the previous year.

Jack Tyrrell, who chairs the organising committee Events and Entertainment in Long Sutton (EELS), said set-up began at around 5.30am.

The fair wasn’t due to open until midday, but people started appearing in town by 8.30am and it was busy all day.

As well as having the traditional grotto for Santa and Mrs Claus, the elves had their own log cabin for the first time.

New town crier Charles Moore also met the crowds as he set to work.

Shops entered into the festive spirit by taking part in a 1950s window dressing competition – the decade was chosen to reflect the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II – and many benefited from a trade boost with an influx of people.

There was also a variety of stalls selling unusual gifts as well as charity stalls.

Mr Tyrrell said: “It went very well. The weather was on our side, that was the biggest bonus for us.

“I think everybody just came together this time, more so than I have seen in a long time.”

Mr Tyrrell said EELS hope the town’s Christmas lights can be updated for next year’s fair and urged townspeople to support the organisations bingo and dance sessions to raise money towards the 2013 event.
