Spanish break for diamond couple

A Whaplode couple have found the ideal way to celebrate their Diamond wedding anniversary - by taking their 60th trip abroad together.

Dennis (80) and Mary (82) Lake flew to Spain last weekend to mark their 60th year as husband and wife on Boxing Day.

Mr Lake, a retired RAF physical training instructor, met his wife when they were both working at RAF Cranwell, near Sleaford, and lived together in various parts of England before making Whaplode their permanent home 21 years ago.

As well as their Spanish holiday, the couple also marked their marriage milestone by having a family get-together before their winter break in the sun.

Mr Lake said: “This is the culmination of many years of hard work and despite one or two sad moments, we’ve always pulled through together.

“I’ve never believed this story that good couples never have an argument because we’ve had our rows, but we get over them.

“You have to work together to get over your downs and you can only do it with time.”

Mr Lake, who was in the RAF for 23 years, admitted his wife has to put up with his passion for bowls, cricket and gardening.

But the couple have enjoyed holidays together in Croatia, Malta and Majorca and their wedding anniversary was made extra special by a trip to a concert featuring Dutch classical music star Andre Rieu in Birmingham.

Mrs Lake, a retired mental health nurse, said: “I suppose it was love at first sight when we met and I remember when he came into the laundry at RAF Cranwell where I was working with some sports clothing for me to wash.

“We started going out after meeting at a dance at Easter 1952 and the reason we got married on Boxing Day in that year was because it was the only day Dennis’s brother could get off as he was a postman.”

The couple, who have three sons, are already planning their 61st holiday together next year.
