Protest at council paying to Church
A member of the public accused Pinchbeck Parish Council of undemocratically supporting the Church of England by paying for grass cutting at St Mary’s.
David Turp told councillors: “This is a tax grab by the rich and powerful Church of England supported undemocratically by the parish council and, in my view, it doesn’t enhance the reputation of either.”
He said St Mary’s should ask its members to get out their chequebooks or seek voluntary donations rather than ask the parish council for cash.
Parish council chairman Andrew Bowser said the council was under a legal duty to cut the grass at closed churchyards and that could not be changed.
Speaking at Monday’s parish council meeting, Coun Bowser said: “This is £700 over our entire budget of £67,000.”
