Holbeach Olympic shot putter Geoff Capes was the special guest at a Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards evening at University Academy Holbeach.

Gold, Silver and Bronze awards were presented to more than 100 students from schools in South Holland, including Spalding Grammar School, Peele Community College, Long Sutton and the academy’s campuses at Holbeach and Crowland.

Peter Kite OBE, honorary secretary of South Holland Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Committee, said: “It went exceptionally well and one of the great things was that it was first time in a long time that students from some of the schools had received awards.

“Lots of parents and other family members attended, candidates gave accounts of what they did and Geoff gave quite an inspiring speech.”
