Spalding actor and director Michael Cross (centre) was in rehearsal with Lara Marland (Rita) and Chris MacDonnell (Frank) in the original stage version of the Willy Russell comedy Educating Rita that was being staged at the Key Theatre, Peterborough.

Michael, then 30, began as a boy actor with Spalding amateur companies SADOS and St Nicholas Players and at that time was still helping with their productions. That year he also choreographed the Key Theatre’s pantomime Mother Goose and appeared at panto in Poole.
