Concerns over crossing plan

A new zebra crossing is likely to be painted in the centre of a village despite objections from some residents and traders.

Donington Parish Council had requested the pedestrian crossing for High Street amid safety fears for those wishing to cross the busy main road.

A pedestrian survey found the area met Lincolnshire County Council’s criteria, but the planned location has angered some, who fear it will lead to a loss of parking spaces, affect businesses, cause vibration damage to homes as lorries accelerate away from the crossing and result in cars blocking the exit to the fire station.

One objector, who has written to the county council ahead of a planning and regulation committee meeting on December 3, said: “The crossing is to be placed in the most congested part of the community, where there are bus stops, a car park, lorries unloading and parking restrictions.

“The area is overloaded and the crossing will reduce parking facilities, cause a loss of trade to businesses and lead to abuse of no parking areas.”

But committee members will receive a recommendation to give the go-ahead, with a report saying: “The location of the proposed crossing is as requested by the parish council and links the main car park to the village Co-op store and other shops.

“It has been determined from detailed design work and is at the most suitable point.

“It is also, as the objector states, at the most congested part of the High Street and therefore is expected to be well used.”
