Fifth-generation SUV sleeker, lighter, more luxurious and more efficient than ever before

Land Rover has released the latest version of its seminal Discovery SUV.

The fifth incarnation of the seven-seat model, which will go on sale early next spring, is new from the ground up, and it’s sleeker, bigger and better than anything that’s gone before it.

It has a brand new monocoque platform which promises superior dynamics and optimised cabin space, as well as a new range of faster, more efficient engines including a new 237bhp, 171g/km 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel.

The newcomer takes its styling cues from the Discovery Vision concept that debuted at the 2014 New York motor show. Gone are the previous squared-off looks, to be replaced by sleek and curvaceous lines. Design boss Gerry McGovern said: “The new Discovery represents a massive shift in design terms from the current one. But I think we’ve managed it without losing the essence of its practicality, capability and versatility.”

Thanks to the use of a new riveted and bonded aluminium monocoque shell, as seen across the rest of the Jaguar and Land Rover ranges, there’s a 20% weight saving over the outgoing car. It facilitates a spacious new cabin, which retains a three-row layout for seven adults, with power-operated seats controlled via the fascia’s 10.0in touchscreen, controls inside the tailgate opening or a smartphone app. At the rear is a generous boot, with a top-hinged, powered tailgate and powered loading platform.

The new platform means the newcomer is longer and lower yet has higher ground clearance than before, and its all-independent self-levelling air-suspension can be dropped by up to 40mm.

In addition to the new Ingenium four-cylinder diesel, there’s a 255bhp 3.0 V6 diesel and a supercharged 355bhp 3.0-litre petrol V6 that returns 26.0mpg and 0-60mph in 6.9sec. All are paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and the Terrain Response 2 system, which monitors road and driving conditions. Autonomous emergency braking is standard across the board.

There are four equipment levels – S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury – and launch prices range from £43,495 to £65,695. The range-topper has nine USB ports, four 12V charging points, in-car 3G wi-fi hotspot and top-flight infotainment.

When the Discovery arrives in the spring, the first 600 will wear high-spec launch-edition insignia, while a special Dynamic Design Pack will boast leather trim, sports wheels and pedals, privacy glass and special colours with a contrasting roof.
