How does the world’s first mainstream all-electric SUV fare when faced with real people?

We invited some regular folk to come along to a studio to look at, and comment on, the Model X, Tesla’s £85,000 all-electric take on the SUV.

The main headline is the Model X’s range of around 350 miles, but what else would pique their interest?

IT consultant Kuldip Sidhu reckons his Porsche Cayenne will be extinct soon, because it’s a diesel model. He likes its high driving position, something that you get in the Model X, which is unlikely to be extinct soon. He liked the Tesla’s practical layout which can have five, six or seven seats, although noting that the third row had limited headroom. The massive iPad-like touchscreen came in for praise, as did almost everything else, from visibility to comfort. With all the Tesla Superchargers near where he lives in London, the Model X might well make sense for his future.

Charity co-ordinator Liz Train liked the Model X in parts. She liked the towing capacity of 2270kg, and she loved the Autopilot semi-autonomous mode which allows you to let the car accelerate, brake and steer on motorways. She was less keen on the looks which she described as ‘not inspirational’ and the lack of boot space, particularly if the third row of seats is in place. Overall, though, she thought it might make a practical replacement for her current vehicle, a Discovery 4.

Maurizio Cappitta is a sales development manager who normally drives a Jaguar XKR. He described how he’s approaching the whole idea of the Model X: ‘The way I see it, Tesla is doing to the motor industry what Apple did to mobile phones.’ His expectations were quite low: “I anticipated that the Model X would be like driving a household appliance – something that just does the job.”
Then he took it for a drive. ‘The instant torque is unbelievable!’ He rated the performance, the Falcon Wing doors, and the way all the software gets remotely updated for free. Not a washing machine, then.

Russell Hunt, a financial advisor, was understandably rather taken with the efficiency and cost savings. “The main benefit of electric motoring for me is the increased fuel efficiency. The range is up to 351 miles and my commute is around 15 miles, so I could simply charge this car at home overnight.” But, speaking of costs, he was less impressed with the cabin. As he put it: “The interior material quality is not representative of a car at this price point.” But overall he couldn’t help but be impressed: “It’s so easy to drive. In the city, it really takes the stress away, due to the lack of noise, electronic driving assists and the lack of a gearbox.”
